3 pm | ERIC MCPHERSON SOLO
A native of NYC, Eric McPherson came to prominence apprenticing with legendary saxophonist and educator, Jackie Mclean, and innovative pianist and composer Andrew Hill. Those foundational experiences cultivated Eric into one of the leading drummers in contemporary creative music. Eric continues the legacy of the musical giants who came before him. As well as performing and teaching internationally with an array of today’s leading contemporary creative musicians, Eric teaches privately and at the University of Hartford’s, Jackie Mclean institute.
3:30 PM | MARK HUNDEVAD & MIKE GENNARO
“While power drummer Gennaro is the backbone, Hundevad (a noted percussionist himself) pivots from marimba/piano work to some cool Moog-powered synth moves. Suggesting funk squelch and Sun Ra soul-stabs, Hundevad shapes this duo in some very cool ways while Gennaro provides pulse and drive to keep things moving along.” – Mechanical Forest Sound
Percussionist Mike Gennaro has collaborated with international improvisers such as John Butcher, Mats Gustafsson, and Eugene Chadbourne. He is a mainstay of the Toronto improvising scene, as well as teaching and performing with indie soul act Mantler and award-winning blues artists Raoul and the Big Time. Gennaro studied with former Rheostatics drummer Dave Clark and ace session drummer Rick Gratton, and has performed throughout North America and Europe.
Mark Hundevad has been a mainstay of Toronto’s alternative music scene since the 1980s, playing vibraphone, piano, drums and electronics with such musicians as Kenny Baldwin, Sabir Mateen and Raphe Malik. Some highlights include studying and performing with jazz innovator Cecil Taylor. Most recently Mark performed with Alex Harding and Lucian Ban for their Dark Blue album release, performed with the great Chicago saxophonist Isaiah Collier. Mark has also performed with Billy Bang, Ernest Dawkins, Daniel Carter, Dominic Duval, Phil Nimmons, Liberty Silver, Jane Bunnett, Jim Heineman, Terry Clarke, Neil Swainson and the Cuban National Choir.
4:30 PM | DARIUS JONES-PEGGY LEE-JOSH ZUBOT
New York City alto saxophonist Darius Jones has created some solid work over the years as a leader and has played with numerous esteemed collaborators, including Gerald Cleaver, Oliver Lake, William Parker, Andrew Cyrille, Craig Taborn, Jason Moran, Trevor Dunn, Dave Burrell, Matthew Shipp, Nasheet Waits, Branford Marsalis, Fay Victor, Cooper-Moore, Matana Roberts, Nicole Mitchell, and more.
Revered Vancouver creative instrumentalists, cellist Peggy Lee and violinist Josh Zubot, with decades of along with Darius Jones make up half of the special project fluXkit Vancouver, which Jones was commissioned to create for the Vancouver artist-run-centre Western Front. The impeccable timing of the cellist and the violinist visiting Something Else! Festival with Dálava, and the saxophonist joining us with Otherlands Trio led to the obvious conclusion that an ad hoc meeting was in the cards. We have no idea where they may take this opportunity, but one thing is for sure; players who have the short hand from previous collaborations can produce interesting dialogue while “catching up” on stage… looking forward to the exciting possibilities!
5:15 PM | HEAVY METAL KLEZMER
Myk Freedman guitar
Tania Gill piano/electronics
Peter Lutek reeds
Michael Herring bass
Dave Clark drums
Myk Freedman’s Heavy Metal Klezmer reimagines traditional Jewish music through the elemental force of fire—through spellcasting with instruments. “Our ancestral history teaches us that true safety means safety for all. Our music proclaims Doikayt, a Yiddish term meaning hereness. When we are here playing music, all who hear us are our kin. In this hereness, we transcend the borders meant to divide us. We burn through the notes of our ancestral past to forge the present we desperately need: one that belongs to everyone.”
Myk Freedman is a Toronto-born, Massachusetts-based guitarist, composer, and bandleader known for fusing old-world Jewish music with the intensity of heavy metal and the improvisational freedom of the American avant-garde. After years in New York’s creative music scene—where he performed with artists such as John Zorn, William Parker, and Elliot Sharp—Myk now leads a cross-border Heavy Metal Klezmer project featuring some of Canada’s most adventurous musicians.
