In 2013, Stereophile asserted that trumpet player, composer, bandleader Dave Douglas was “one of the most exciting and versatile musicians in jazz” and given the two projects he's showcasing at Something Else!, it's clear that this statement remains true.
The prolific New Yorker's contributions have been recognized through a number of distinctions. He was the recipient of Doris Duke Artist Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award, and has garnered two Grammy Award nominations for his work. Douglas’ discography encompasses over 60 unique recordings and his numerous illustrious collaborators include the likes of Bill Laswell, Joe Lovano, Tomeka Reid, Jeff Parker, Shigeto and Anna Webber.
The lineups for the two bands he's bringing to this year's Something Else! Festival are equally impressive. Marching Music sees him leading stalwart players Rafiq Bhatia (guitar), Melvin Gibbs (bass) and Gene Lake (drums).
Meanwhile, the more atmospheric Mountain Passages comprises top-tier players such as Michael Moore (reeds) of Instant Composer's Pool, Marcus Rojas (tuba) and Vancouverites Peggy Lee (cello) and Dylan van der Schyff (drums).
