Nick Fraser (Toronto) drums, composition
Tony Malaby (NYC) saxophones
Kris Davis (NYC) piano
Featuring compositions by Nick Fraser and improvisations by the group, these three seasoned improvisers delight in musical abstraction and their music is an intense journey into the unknown. The group’s debut CD, “Too Many Continents” was released on the Lisbon-based Clean Feed Records in 2015.
They are touring and celebrating their brand new 2019 release, “Zoning” on Astral Spirits, “also featuring jazz figures Ingrid Laubrock (tenor saxophone) and Lina Allemano (trumpet). The music is full of surprises, twists and strong contrasts. The musicians already have their own and original playing style. Their experimentative, fresh and evocative ideas bring life, brightness and passion to the compositions. Open free improvisations, driving melodies, wild passages, spontaneous solos, contrasting pieces and terrific riffs are the main compounds which accompany all the time the main musical pattern.”
The three have been friends for twenty years and seem to communicate their ideas telepathically. There’s an undeniable bond between the three, and this kinship results in a totally organic, balanced music. Nick Fraser’s Too Many Continents is a grand slam.
– Peter Gough, The Free Jazz Collective
Nick Fraser has become first-choice drummer for numerous bandleaders ranging from the post-bop mainstream to free improvisation. He’s done it with aggressive musicality and consistently inventive drumming, combining drive and subtlety.
– Stuart Broomer, Wholenote Magazine
Nick Fraser (drums) has been an active and engaging presence in the Toronto new jazz and improvised music community since he moved there from Ottawa in 1995. A Juno Award winner, Nick has performed with a veritable “who’s who” of Canadian jazz and improvised music in addition to such prominent artists as Anthony Braxton, William Parker, Roscoe Mitchell and Marilyn Crispell. “Fraser not so much plays the drums as hurls himself whole body and soul against skin and metal… truly talented.”
– Bill Stunt, CBC Radio
Tony Malaby (saxophone) has been based in New York since 1995 and has been a member of many notable jazz groups including Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, Mark Helias’ Open Loose, Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band, Fred Hersch’s quintet, and bands of his own. “One of New York City’s most in-demand saxophonists, Tony Malaby has become one of the most distinctive artists of his time.”
– Troy Collins, All About Jazz New York
Pianist-composer Kris Davis has blossomed as one of the singular talents on the New York jazz scene, a deeply thoughtful, resolutely individual artist who offers “uncommon creative adventure,” according to JazzTimes. “A freethinking, gifted pianist on the scene, Davis lives in each note that she plays. Her range is impeccable; she tackles prepared piano, minimalism and jazz standards, all under one umbrella. I consider her an honorary descendant of Cecil Taylor and a welcome addition to the fold.”
